3 of a Kind

I love the paperback cover design(s) for the late, Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño’s last work entitled 2666. The 3 paperback covers are a translation of the single hard cover edition. I love the way the numerical title on each spine wraps around to the cover so that it reads separately on each book while also working as a section of the title when the 3 spines sit together on a shelf.

Bolaño’s work has gained a lot of acclaim in the past few years as it has been translated into English. I recently finished reading his New York Times Best Seller, The Savage Detectives (hard to get through, but worth it). As described in this week’s book review in NY Magazine, 2666 is a novel built out of five linked novellas, each of which is itself a collage of endless stand-alone parts: riffs, nightmares, set pieces, monologues, dead ends, stories within stories.
