MoMA Atlantic/Pacific Installation
I love when cultural institutions find a way to actually make art accessible to the community. MoMA’s simple, low-tech approach for their month long installation in Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street subway station shows that MoMA really understands its local community. The choice of a major subway station is a perfect place to share art — it is where New Yorkers are everyday. We spend so much time underground, why not remind us of great works that reside here too. Even culturally savvy Brooklynites need a good kick in the ass to go appreciate the things we are always too busy to see.
The installation is up now through March 15. Nearly every surface of the station has been transformed by reproductions of the iconic works in MoMA’s collection. I happened to catch it last weekend by chance (I didn’t know about it before I saw it). Below is a kind of strange 3D rendering of the exhibit.
